Week 7: Evaluation and Assessment

Multimedia Assessment:
This video with questions would be a formative assessment guide for me to check for student understanding of the quadrilateral attributes that we learn in 5th grade.

SURVEY: End of Year Reflection that I plan on giving to my students this last week to fill out. Click here to access it. Or see below.

Project Based Learning Rubric:

This rubric was designed for a PBL activity that I would have my students complete in math. It targets the 5th grade CCSS of the coordinate plane. The goal would be to create a map, using a coordinate plane, to give directions to another group on how to get to a certain place in the school.

Use in the Classroom:
I intend to use the rubric to assess the students learning on a scale rating of 4 - 1. I will look at their product and give them a score, along with having themselves score their group, and the group that uses their map to score them. I will take the average of the 3 scores. Learning objective: Students will be able to create a map on the coordinate plane to guide another group of students to a certain spot in the building. I would like to incorporate PBL with other multimedia tools. I was thinking groups could put their maps and instructions on Aurasma with a trigger image. Another option would be to have them score themselves online through google classroom. I would need to make sure the groups were split up with a mixture of ability levels in each to ensure success on the project. Furthermore, students would need to be given clear instructions on what to be doing (the rubric), in order to be successful.

Application:
The Pre-Training Principle from week 1 seemed to be the only real principle to align with the PBL rubric. I believe that the students will need to be comfortable with the coordinate plan first and how it works before starting this project. Thus, the prior knowledge is key in ensuring the success of this project. The principle summarizes that knowing the key concepts before is beneficial to deeper and more meaningful learning.

Reflection:
PBL was a term that used to puzzle me as I wondered about the success of it as a school-wide building. My hometown is turning the elementary into a PBL school and I was unsure about that. Yet, I can see the benefits of having it implemented every now and then. Since the school year is ending for us, this is something I want to work on planning over the summer so I can be clear in my instructions when explaining the project to the students. I enjoyed creating the survey as I ended up using it with my students. The playlist was one of my favorite things! Video is so engaging for students, but to add the questions right to any video blew my mind. I am recommending that to my colleagues to try out.
