Week 3: Digital Images

The collage I created below was from an image of the Constitution. I would show this to my students at the beginning of the year when we are creating our Classroom Constitution and at the end when we talk about the American Revolution.

Please click here to access my GIF. This GIF I would use for a reflection on the Revolutionary War. The Revolutionary War is a part of our 5th Grade Social Studies Curriculum and in showing this I would question the students on what they believe is to come.

Below you will see my infographic that I created on the Road to Revolution. This is a topic with many standards that are covered in the 5th Grade Michigan Social Studies curriculum.

Use in the classroom:
All of these artifacts I would use for the unit on the American Revolution. I created these tools to be used as review for the students. In addition, the infographic can be an example of something they could create for their final project on this unit. A learning objective for this: Students will be able to  assemble and create a timeline with a minimum of 8 photos on the American Revolution.
I will need to incorporate access of these tools into my teaching before letting my students create their project. For instance, I would like to give them a tutorial on how to use these sites with something on a personal note (ex: all about me). In doing so, they could play around with the sites and familiarize themselves with the tools. Once familiar, the students could then create their project in a more timely manner. I plan on talking with our iPad Specials teacher about making time to introduce these sites to the students during their Special time.

Application:
From week 1, the design principles for instructional multimedia align with the lesson idea by incorporating in graphics with minimal text. The principles state how students learn better and are more engaged with graphics, and this weeks artifacts do just that. The GIF is something so relevant to our students today and I think if they were allowed to create their own, they would really be engaged in the academic learning. When creating the artifacts this week, I thought of the pre-training principle which focuses on students being more connected to the learning if they have already been exposed to part of it. I want to use this as a review, so this really fell right into place with that principle. Also, the layout of the timeline in the infographic aligns with the Segmenting principle of learning something in steps.

Reflection:
This week I was opened up to more tools I can use with my students. I had heard and seen GIF's before, but never thought I could make one. Yet, this week showed me I can do that stuff. Even better, my students can with my modeling and allowing them access to it. I'd really like to use the infographics with my students for a final project. I also, think it would be a useful tool for them to utilize when learning about the different attributes of quadrilaterals in our Geometry unit. I thoroughly enjoyed this week! My favorite part was creating the meme, as I found myself laughing at all different kinds of ones. They brought back memories of college and it made me think I could do this with my students to help them create even more memories. I grew in my knowledge of new resources and how to incorporate them into the classroom.

  1. Jaclyn,

I am definitely going to use aspects of this assignment in my classroom in the future. I thought your infograph was outstanding because it's a clear timeline of the lead up the Revolutionary War and why the United States had to fight for their own independence. Students know that the British had control over the colonies but, not to the right extent and by showing all of these events it will show the students that enough was enough for those living in the colonies. The collage was great as well because the Constitution is one of the most important documents in our nations history and students have to understand how it affects them today. Relating history to the present is important.

  2. I love how you used the infographic as a timeline. That is excellent. It's easy to read and a quick way to take in the information.
